I’ve been reading up on perimenopause, which I now know is the transition phase leading up to menopause. I understand that it’s marked by fluctuating levels of estrogen and progesterone, which explains why I experience symptoms like irregular periods, hot flashes, and those sleep problems.

What reassures me is that Mayo Clinic stresses that adopting a healthy lifestyle is the first and best line of treatment I have. That means I need to focus on a diet that’s high in fiber and low in fat. For me, this matters because it helps prevent the risk of heart disease and osteoporosis, which I’m told goes up during this stage.

I’m also clear that regular exercise, and this is key, especially strength training with weights, is vital for me if I want to keep my bones strong, lift my mood, and of course, sleep better. Plus, I know I have to make an effort to cut back on caffeine and alcohol, since the article suggests that can help me better manage those annoying hot flashes and the interruptions to my sleep at night.
