The Minimum Number of Steps to Extend Your Life and Prevent Disease
Forget 10,000 steps. The NIA reveals the minimum number of daily steps to reduce mortality and extend your life. Regular movement protects your health.
By Erika Reyna · · 1 min read I’d always heard that the goal was 10,000 steps, but new research from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) has given me a really interesting perspective. As I understand it, taking 8,000 steps or more a day, compared to just 4,000, significantly lowers my risk of death from any cause by 51%.
This finding drives home for me that regular movement is absolutely crucial if I want to maintain my muscle function and my independence as I age. On top of that, moderate to vigorous physical activity has been shown to be closely linked to better muscle function.
The message I’m taking away is very clear: every step counts, and even if I don’t hit that “magic” number of 10,000 every day, I know that modestly increasing my daily activity already brings me significant benefits for my longevity.
