Bone Health, Calcium, Vitamin D: The Dynamic Duo for Strong Bones
I'm focusing on the combination of Calcium and Vitamin D for complete bone health, just as science recommends.
By Erika Reyna · · 1 min read Thinking about my long-term wellness, I understand that bone health, Calcium, and Vitamin D are a priority backed by science. I read that, although magnesium is important, the real challenge is the synergistic interaction between Vitamin D and Calcium. Research from organizations like the NIH and Mayo Clinic has made it very clear to me that Vitamin D isn’t just crucial; it’s the key that allows my body to effectively absorb Calcium, which is the structural building block of my bones. I realize I need to focus on Calcium sources like low-fat dairy, broccoli, and kale, and pair them with foods rich in Vitamin D, like fatty fish (salmon or tuna) or fortified products.
If I’m concerned about getting optimal calcium absorption for my bone health, beyond diet, science points to weight-bearing physical activity (resistance training) as one of the best non-dietary strategies. Multiple studies show that lifting or bodyweight exercise puts stress on the bones, which stimulates the formation of new bone tissue and increases bone mineral density (BMD), especially in women. So rather than relying only on supplements, I would focus on getting at least 30 minutes of weight-bearing or high-impact exercise (like brisk walking or dancing) most days of the week, while also making sure I get enough calcium and vitamin D, for complete, science-backed bone health.
